Token Market Cap: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
A token's market cap on a DEX page is price × an estimate of circulating supply. Before a swap, the estimate matters more than the number.
Short answer
Before a swap, read market cap as price × circulating supply, where circulating supply may be self-reported. DEX Screener uses self-reported circulating supply (from Enhanced Token Info or CoinGecko) when available, otherwise market cap equals FDV; CoinGecko's onchain API returns market_cap_usd as null for unverified tokens. Check where the supply figure comes from, compare market cap with FDV (the gap is locked or unvested supply) and with pool liquidity (how much can actually be sold).
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Market cap = FDV | No separate circulating figure supplied |
| Market cap < FDV | Self-reported circulating supply used |
| Market cap null (CoinGecko) | Token unverified |
| Market cap ≫ liquidity | Thin exit relative to valuation |

Example
Illustrative: market cap $20M, FDV $80M, quote liquidity $600k. 75% of supply is not counted as circulating; liquidity is 3% of market cap. A buyer should expect supply to grow and exits to be costly.

How is DEX market cap calculated?
Price × circulating supply, often self-reported.
Why does market cap equal FDV?
No separate circulating figure was supplied.
Why is CoinGecko's market cap null?
It returns null for unverified tokens.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- DEX Screener: Token listing — listing after first liquidity and trade; supply inputs.
- CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
