Token FDV: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
Fully diluted valuation tells you what the market implies all tokens are worth. Before a swap, the useful question is how that compares with what you could sell into.
Short answer
Before a swap, read FDV as (total supply − burned) × price, DEX Screener's formula, and compare it with three things: pool liquidity (how much value can actually be exchanged), circulating supply and unlocks (how much more supply can be sold), and similar tokens' FDVs (whether the valuation is plausible). A high FDV with thin liquidity and large upcoming unlocks means the price can fall sharply as supply arrives, regardless of your entry size.
Three comparisons
| Compare FDV with | Question | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Pool liquidity | Can holders exit? | FDV ÷ liquidity very high |
| Circulating + unlocks | How much supply is coming? | Large unlocks soon |
| Peer FDVs | Is it plausible? | Far above similar projects |

Example: same FDV, different risk
Illustrative: two tokens each show $40M FDV. Token A has $2M quote liquidity and 80% of supply circulating. Token B has $60,000 quote liquidity and 15% circulating with a large unlock next month. Same valuation, very different risk: B's price rests on thin depth with much more supply still to arrive.
Conclusion
Before a swap, compare FDV with liquidity, unlocks and peers, and check its inputs against the contract.

What is FDV?
(Total supply − burned supply) × price, per DEX Screener.
Why compare FDV with liquidity?
To see how much value could actually be exchanged.
Do unlocks matter?
Yes; they add sellable supply.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- DEX Screener: Token listing — listing after first liquidity and trade; supply inputs.
- Uniswap: Concentrated liquidity — active liquidity within price ranges.
