Duplicate Token Symbols: How to Read the Number Before a Swap

Anyone can create a token with any ticker. When search returns several tokens called the same thing, only the contract address tells them apart.

Short answer

Token symbols are not unique on DEXes; copycat tokens often reuse a popular ticker. Before a swap, verify the contract address against the project's official channel, compare pool age, liquidity and holder counts across the duplicates, and check whether the token is verified on the data source you're using. On Solana, check mint authority and freeze authority on the mint account. Never pick a token by ticker or by highest volume alone.

Example

Illustrative: search for a ticker returns five tokens. One matches the project's posted address and has the oldest pool; another created yesterday has higher 24h volume. Volume doesn't establish identity.

Questions readers ask

Can two tokens share a ticker?

Yes; only the address is unique.

How do I find the real one?

Match the address with the project's official source.

Is highest volume the real token?

Not necessarily.

Sources and methodology

DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.

  1. Solana: Assets on Solana (tokens) — mint accounts, supply, decimals, mint and freeze authority.
  2. DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
