Multiple Pools for One Token: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
One token can trade in many pools across DEXes and fee tiers. The pool your swap uses decides the price, impact and fee.
Short answer
A token often has several pools — different DEXes, quote tokens and fee tiers. Aggregators may route across them; direct swaps use one. Before a swap, list the pools with known liquidity, their quote tokens, fee tiers and recent activity. The deepest pool usually offers the least impact, but a lower fee tier with enough liquidity can be cheaper for small sizes. Pools with null liquidity need checking, not ignoring.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Deepest pool | Usually least impact |
| Lower fee tier | Cheaper if liquidity suffices |
| Different quote | Extra conversion |
| Null liquidity | Unknown; check |

Example
Illustrative: for a $5,000 swap, the 0.3% pool with $820k liquidity gives lower total cost than the 1% pool with $140k, despite any similar quoted price.

Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
- DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
