Base and Quote Tokens: How to Read the Number Before a Swap

Every pool pair has a base token (what's priced) and a quote token (what it's priced in). Reversing them inverts every number on the page.

Short answer

In a pair like TOKEN/WETH, TOKEN is the base and WETH the quote: the price says how much WETH one TOKEN costs. Liquidity, volume and price changes are reported relative to that orientation. If an interface lists WETH/TOKEN instead, the price is inverted. Before a swap, confirm which token is base by contract address, what the quote is, and whether the displayed price is per base token. CoinGecko's OHLCV lets you choose base or quote for candles — check which you're viewing.

Inverting the pair inverts the price.

How do I confirm the base?

By contract address.

Sources and methodology

DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.

  1. DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
  2. CoinGecko API: Onchain OHLCV WebSocket — pool candles, base/quote selection, nullable fields.
