ATR Volatility Expansion Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
A volatility-expansion rule enters when a bar's range is several times ATR. It catches the start of big moves and also the end of short squeezes.
Short answer
An ATR expansion rule enters in the direction of a bar whose true range exceeds k × ATR (e.g. 2×), on the idea that volatility expansion starts trends. The same bars include liquidation spikes that reverse quickly. Use next-bar fills (the signal bar's close may be far from where you can enter), compute break-even cost including higher slippage after big bars, and compare continuation vs fade on the same signals.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 110 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.66% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.08%) | −0.16% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.40% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.66% |
Continuation vs fade
| Version | Trades | Net avg (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Follow expansion bar | 110 | +0.53% |
| Fade expansion bar | 110 | −0.31% |
| Follow, OI rising only | 60 | +0.81% |
