ATR in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Average True Range smooths each bar's true range. The live bar's true range only grows during the bar, so ATR can only drift upward intrabar from that term.
Short answer
True range = max(high − low, |high − prior close|, |low − prior close|), and ATR is Wilder's moving average of it (weight 1/N). The live bar's high and low can only expand, so its true range is non-decreasing through the bar and the live ATR can only rise from that component. Stops or sizes calculated from live ATR mid-bar will be smaller than those calculated at the close on a volatile bar. Size and place stops from closed-bar ATR.
Which part of ATR uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Live high/low | Yes | Only expand |
| True range | Yes | Non-decreasing intrabar |
| ATR (1/N weight) | Yes | Drifts up |
Worked: ATR(14) = $600; the live bar's range grows from $300 to $1,300. ATR moves from ≈ $579 to ≈ $650 (600 + (TR − 600)/14).
