Liquidation Cascades in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

A cascade is liquidations triggering price moves that trigger more liquidations. In data it looks like price, OI and forced orders moving together, fast.

Short answer

A liquidation cascade happens when forced orders push price into further liquidation levels, producing a rapid move with large forced volume and a sharp OI drop. Read it with three series: price (speed and size of the move), OI (falling as positions are closed) and liquidations (spiking on one side). A cascade usually ends when forced flow is exhausted; the first bars after it show whether new positions step in (OI rebuilding) or the market stays thin.

Reading the aftermath

After a long-side cascade, funding often drops and leverage is cleared. That doesn't mean price must rise; check whether OI rebuilds with buyers or sellers.
