ATR Percent Risk Filter Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
An ATR% filter skips trades when volatility is too high (or too low). It changes trade count, cost share and drawdown.
Short answer
An ATR% risk filter allows entries only when ATR ÷ price is within a band (e.g. 1–4% on daily bars). High-volatility filters avoid trades where stops would be wide and slippage large; low-volatility filters avoid trades where costs dominate small moves. Test the band, use closed-bar ATR%, compare trade count, net average and drawdown with the unfiltered strategy, and compute break-even cost.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 130 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.52% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.04%) | −0.07% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.35% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.52% |
Filter effect
| Version | Trades | Net avg | Max DD (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unfiltered | 210 | +0.21% | −22% |
| ATR% 1–4% | 130 | +0.38% | −13% |
| ATR% < 2% | 70 | +0.12% | −8% |
