ATR Percent in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
ATR percent divides ATR by price so volatility can be compared across coins. Both parts move on the live bar, in opposite directions on a sharp drop.
Short answer
ATR% = ATR ÷ close × 100. On the live bar, ATR can only drift up as the bar's true range grows, while the close moves with price. In a sharp drop, ATR rises and price falls, so ATR% rises from both sides; in a sharp rally, the rising price partly offsets the rising ATR. ATR%-based filters ('trade only when ATR% < 3') can therefore switch on or off mid-bar. Use closed-bar values for filters and position sizing.
Which part of ATR % uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| ATR (Wilder, 1/N) | Yes | Drifts up with live range |
| Close | Yes | Moves with price |
| Ratio | Yes | Amplified on drops |
Because the denominator falls when price drops, ATR% is asymmetric: the same absolute range reads as higher volatility after a decline.
