Why Crypto VWAP Changes When You Switch the Session Timezone

Crypto trades 24/7, so a 'daily' VWAP resets at whatever clock time your chart uses. Change the timezone and the VWAP line moves.

Short answer

Session VWAP accumulates price × volume ÷ volume from the start of each session and resets at the session boundary. On 24/7 crypto markets the boundary is a clock time set by your chart's timezone or exchange setting, so switching from UTC to another timezone moves the reset point and changes every VWAP value. TradingView's VWAP documentation describes the anchor period. Fix the reset time (UTC is common), state it, or use an anchored VWAP from a specific event.

Illustrative: VWAP from 00:00 UTC at 09:00 is 60,250; from 03:00 UTC it is 60,480, because the overnight drop between 00:00 and 03:00 is excluded from the second.

Alerts and backtests inherit the reset

If your chart uses one timezone and your alerts or backtests run on another, VWAP-based rules evaluate against different lines. A VWAP reclaim alert set on a UTC chart will not match a VWAP drawn from local midnight. Keep the same reset across chart, alerts, screens and backtests, and include it in the rule's written description.

When sharing VWAP levels with others, add the reset in the note: 'VWAP (00:00 UTC reset), venue A perp'. Without it, two people can look at 'VWAP' and see different numbers.

Conclusion

Fix and state the VWAP reset time on 24/7 markets, or anchor it to an event.
