Volume Delta vs Price Change in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Volume delta and price change usually point the same way. When they don't, the passive side is doing something worth noting.
Short answer
Comparing volume delta with price change per bar sorts bars into four types: positive delta with price up (aggression succeeded), positive delta with price down or flat (buying absorbed), negative delta with price down (selling succeeded) and negative delta with price up or flat (selling absorbed). The divergent types are absorption candidates; price response over following bars tests whether the absorbing side was right.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| +delta, price up | Aggressive buyers succeeded |
| +delta, price ≤ 0 | Buying absorbed |
| −delta, price down | Aggressive sellers succeeded |
| −delta, price ≥ 0 | Selling absorbed |
Measuring the response
Classify bars by delta sign and price change, then measure price change over the next N bars for each class. If divergent bars predict reversals more than aligned bars, the reading adds information on that market.
Example
Illustrative: a bar with +300 BTC delta closes 5 bps lower. Over the next 10 bars price falls 0.5%, consistent with buyers being absorbed. Track how often that follows.
