Bid-Side Absorption Candidates in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Bid-side absorption is heavy selling into resting bids that doesn't push price lower. The response afterwards decides if the bids really held.
Short answer
A bid-side absorption candidate shows large sell-aggressor volume (negative delta) at a level while price fails to fall further. Price response is the test: if price rises within a defined window, passive buyers absorbed the selling; if price later breaks lower, the bids were only delaying. Check the book: bids being refilled supports absorption; bids being pulled weakens it. Measure outcomes across cases, including failures.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Rises after | Absorption held |
| Ranges | Stalemate |
| Breaks lower | Absorption failed |
| Breaks lower fast | Bids pulled |
Measuring the response
Define the level, the minimum negative delta, the maximum price change during the selling and the response window. Record what the book did during and after.
Example
Illustrative: 420 BTC of net selling at 60,000 over 10 minutes, price down only 3 bps. Over the next hour price rises 0.8%. One case; the success rate across many is what you need.
