Volatility Compression Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
A compression rule waits for volatility to shrink to a historic low, then trades the breakout. The definition of 'low' and the breakout rule do most of the work.
Short answer
A volatility-compression strategy flags periods when a measure such as Bollinger Band Width or ATR% falls to an N-bar low, then enters on a break of the compression range. Compression says a move is likely, not its direction, so the breakout rule decides direction. Test the look-back for 'lowest', the breakout confirmation, and whether trading both directions or only with trend helps. Compute break-even cost and use next-bar fills.
