Trend-Line Breakout Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
Trend lines drawn by hand can't be backtested honestly. A mechanical line through defined pivots can.
Short answer
A trend-line breakout rule needs a mechanical line: for example, through the last two confirmed pivot highs (each with N bars on both sides), entering when price closes above it. Pivot confirmation delays the line by N bars; using unconfirmed pivots looks into the future. Define pivots, minimum spacing and the break rule, use next-bar fills, compute break-even cost and compare with a simple channel breakout on the same data.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 95 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.68% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.04%) | −0.08% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.50% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.68% |
