Donchian Channels in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close

Donchian Channels are the highest high and lowest low of the last N bars. Whether that window includes the live bar decides if a 'breakout' is even possible.

Short answer

Donchian upper = highest high of N bars, lower = lowest low. If the live bar is included, a new high simply moves the upper band with price, so price can never close above it; breakout rules therefore usually compare price with the channel of the previous N completed bars. Check which convention your chart uses. Live-bar inclusion also means the channel itself changes intrabar whenever a new extreme prints.

With the live bar excluded, the bands are fixed for the whole bar, so breakout signals are clean — but must still be confirmed at the close if the rule requires a close.
