Stochastic RSI in Crypto: Warm-Up Bars and Short-History Errors
Stochastic RSI stacks an RSI, a stochastic window and two smoothings. Warm-up adds up, and the RSI inside it is recursive.
Short answer
Stoch RSI(14, 14, 3, 3) needs about 15 bars for RSI, 14 more for the stochastic window, then 3 + 3 for %K and %D smoothing — roughly 34 bars before %D exists. The embedded RSI uses Wilder smoothing, so values keep shifting with the start point. On short histories, Stoch RSI often pins at 0 or 100 because the RSI range is narrow. Require extra history and compare with a longer series.
How much history Stochastic RSI needs
| Component | Bars needed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| RSI(14) | 15 | Recursive |
| Stochastic of RSI (14) | +14 | Window |
| %K smoothing (3) | +3 | Window |
| %D smoothing (3) | +3 (≈ 34) | Window |
Recursive smoothing: values depend on where the series starts and settle only gradually.
Short-history errors
- Pinned at 0/100 on short series
- Recursive RSI start effects
- Screens on new listings
- Gaps
