Stochastic RSI in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Stochastic RSI applies a stochastic formula to RSI itself. That double transformation makes it one of the jumpiest indicators inside a live bar.
Short answer
Stochastic RSI = (RSI − lowest RSI over N) ÷ (highest RSI − lowest RSI over N), usually smoothed into %K and %D. Because it rescales RSI to its recent range, a small intrabar change in RSI can move Stoch RSI from 20 to 80 within the same bar, especially when the RSI range is narrow. Crosses of 20/80 or %K/%D seen mid-bar frequently vanish by the close. Use closed bars and consider the smoothed %D for signals.
Which part of Stochastic RSI uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| RSI (current) | Yes | Moves with price |
| Highest/lowest RSI over N | Yes, if current is extreme | Range can change |
| Raw Stoch RSI | Yes | Amplified |
| %K / %D smoothing | Yes | Damped |
When the recent RSI range is narrow, the denominator is small and any RSI change is magnified. That is why Stoch RSI can swing across its whole scale inside one candle.

Why does Stoch RSI jump so much?
It rescales RSI to a recent range; narrow ranges amplify changes.
Should I use %K or %D?
%D is smoother; use closed-bar values either way.
Is it worse than RSI intrabar?
Typically more volatile.
