Stablecoin Collateral Stress in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
When a stablecoin used as collateral trades away from $1, margin values and prices quoted in it move together. Data quoted in that stablecoin can mislead.
Short answer
Many perps are margined and quoted in a stablecoin. If that stablecoin trades below $1, prices quoted in it rise in stablecoin terms even if the asset's dollar value doesn't, and collateral held in it loses dollar value. Read derivatives data during stress with the stablecoin's own price: compare USDT- and USDC-quoted markets, check funding and basis on each, and note exchange collateral haircuts if published.
What changes
| Item | Effect if stablecoin < $1 |
|---|---|
| Price in stablecoin | Appears higher |
| Collateral value (USD) | Lower |
| Cross-quote spread | Widens |
| Funding/basis | Can diverge by quote |
