Spot Flow During a Futures Squeeze in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
During a futures squeeze, perp shorts buy back in a rush. Whether spot buyers join decides if the move holds after the squeeze ends.
Short answer
In a short squeeze, perp price rises as shorts cover (OI falls, short liquidations spike). Spot flow shows whether real buyers participate: rising spot CVD alongside the squeeze suggests broader demand; flat or falling spot CVD suggests the move is forced covering only. Price response after the squeeze — holding gains or giving them back — tests the reading. Compare spot and perp CVD over the same windows.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Spot CVD rises with squeeze | Broad demand; gains more likely held |
| Spot flat | Covering only |
| Spot selling into squeeze | Spot sellers using the rally |
| Basis widens | Perp-led move |
Measuring the response
Record perp and spot CVD (same units), OI change and basis over the squeeze, then measure price change in the following hours.
Example
Illustrative: a squeeze adds 4% with perp CVD +1,800 BTC, OI −6% and spot CVD only +120 BTC. Over the next six hours, price gives back most of the gain.
