Short-Squeeze Candidates in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
A short squeeze needs crowded shorts and a reason for them to cover. Data can show the crowding; price shows whether covering starts.
Short answer
A short-squeeze candidate is a market where shorts look crowded — negative funding, rising OI while price holds or rises, high short-side account ratios — so that a rise could force covering. It becomes a squeeze only when price rises and OI falls with short liquidations, as shorts buy back. Read the setup and the trigger separately: crowding can persist for a long time, and funding alone isn't enough. Short-covering shows as price up, OI down.
Setup vs trigger
| Stage | Data |
|---|---|
| Crowding | Negative funding, OI rising, price not falling |
| Trigger | Price breaks up |
| Squeeze | Price up, OI down, short liquidations |
| Exhaustion | Funding back near neutral, OI stabilises |
Price context
If price rises with OI rising, new longs are driving rather than shorts covering — a different situation.
