Order Flow During Options Expiry in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Around large options expiries, hedging adjustments and settlement can shape order flow. Response before and after expiry tests whether it mattered.

Short answer

Before a large expiry, hedging flows around big strikes can pull or pin price in models; at settlement (Deribit settles at 08:00 UTC), those positions disappear. Measure delta, volatility and price distance from the largest strikes in the hours before, then whether volatility expands after settlement. Treat 'pinning' as a hypothesis tested across expiries.

Measuring the response

For each large expiry, record distance from max-OI strikes, realised volatility before and after, and delta around 08:00 UTC.

Example

Illustrative: price stayed within 1% of the largest strike in the final day, then volatility rose after settlement. Compare with smaller expiries.
