Options Volatility Term Structure in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

Term structure plots at-the-money implied volatility by expiry. Its slope shows whether near-term or longer-term volatility is priced higher.

Short answer

Volatility term structure plots ATM IV against time to expiry. Normally it slopes upward (contango): longer tenors carry slightly higher IV. When near-term IV rises above longer-term (backwardation), the market is pricing an imminent move — common during sell-offs or before known events.
