Options Volatility Smiles in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

A volatility smile plots implied volatility across strikes for one expiry. Its shape shows how the market prices large moves in each direction.

Short answer

The volatility smile shows IV by strike (or delta) for a single expiry. A U-shape means both tails are priced above at-the-money; a smirk leaning to puts means downside tails are richer. Read the smile with price: a smile that steepens on the put side as spot falls signals tail-protection demand. Use mark IV for completeness and only two-sided quotes for bid/ask IV, since far strikes may have no bids.
