Options IV vs Realized Volatility: Match the Horizon Before Comparing

Implied volatility looks forward over an option's life. Realised volatility looks back over a window you choose. Compare them only over matching horizons.

Short answer

Implied volatility (IV) is the market's annualised expectation of volatility over an option's remaining life, backed out from its price. Realised volatility (RV) is the annualised standard deviation of past returns over a window. To compare them, match the horizon (a 30-day option's IV with 30-day RV), use the same annualisation (crypto trades 365 days, so √365) and the same return frequency. Mismatched horizons produce false 'cheap' or 'expensive' readings.

Calculating RV

RV = standard deviation of daily log returns × √365 (crypto trades every day). For hourly returns, multiply by √(24 × 365). Illustrative: daily return standard deviation 3% → RV ≈ 3% × 19.1 = 57%.

IV usually exceeds subsequent RV on average because option sellers demand a premium, but that varies with events. See Bitcoin Options Skew vs Put-Call Ratio: Different Sentiment Inputs for skew.

Events inside the window

A single large move inside the realised window can dominate RV. If a 15% day falls inside the last 30 days, 30-day RV will be inflated until it rolls out, which can make IV look cheap. Compare RV with and without known event days, and check whether the option's expiry spans a scheduled event that could justify higher IV.

Conclusion

Compare IV with RV over the same horizon and annualisation before calling options cheap or expensive.
