Bitcoin Options Skew vs Put-Call Ratio: Different Sentiment Inputs
Skew measures what traders pay for protection versus upside. Put-call ratio counts how many puts and calls exist or trade. They often disagree.
Short answer
Options skew compares implied volatility of puts and calls at equivalent distance from the money (often by delta), so it measures the price of downside protection relative to upside. The put-call ratio compares the number (open interest or volume) of puts to calls, regardless of price or strike. A high put-call ratio with flat skew can mean puts are used for cheap income strategies; steep put skew with a low ratio means protection is expensive even if few hold it. Deribit's options-data guide distinguishes skew, smile and term structure.
What each measures
Combinations
| Skew | P/C ratio | Possible reading |
|---|---|---|
| Steep put skew | High | Strong demand for protection |
| Steep put skew | Low | Protection expensive; few holding it |
| Flat | High | Puts used in income/spread strategies |
| Call skew | Low | Upside chasing |

Example: protection expensive, ratio low
Illustrative: after a sharp drop, the 25-delta put trades 8 volatility points above the matching call, but the put-call open interest ratio is 0.6. Few traders hold puts, yet the ones being bought are pricey. Demand is intense at the margin rather than broad. If the ratio rises sharply while skew stays steep, protection-buying is broadening.
Tracking both over several days shows whether fear is spreading or concentrated.
Conclusion
