OI Growth During Price Consolidation in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

Open interest rising while price moves sideways means positions are building without a winner yet. The eventual break can force one side out.

Short answer

When price consolidates and OI rises, new longs and shorts are both entering — leverage is accumulating. Read it with funding and positioning: rising OI with positive funding suggests longs are paying to hold (more crowded long); with negative funding, shorts. When price breaks the range, the trapped side may be forced to close, adding to the move. Use OI in coins to avoid price effects.
