Multi-Exchange Price Data: Event Time vs Retrieval Time
Prices from several exchanges are only comparable if read at the same moment. Each venue's own timestamp, not your fetch order, defines that moment.
Short answer
When comparing prices across venues, use each venue's trade or update timestamp (e.g. Binance trade time T, book transaction time) rather than the order in which you fetched them. REST calls to five venues can span hundreds of milliseconds; in fast markets that alone creates 'spreads'. Record venue time and retrieval time per quote, set a maximum time difference for comparisons, and discard pairs outside it.
Which times the data carries
| Time | Present? | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Venue timestamp | Usually yes | Event time |
| Retrieval time | No | Record it |
| Fetch span | Derived | Max − min retrieval |
| Tolerance | Your rule | Comparable window |

Illustrative: a 0.15% cross-venue 'gap' appeared only because venue E was read 420 ms after venue A during a fast move.

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference and CoinGecko's onchain API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema doesn't document a timestamp, this guide says so and recommends recording retrieval time yourself.
