Cross-Exchange Price Signal Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs

Using one venue's price move to trade another assumes a lead-lag. Latency, fees and data timing usually decide whether it exists for you.

Short answer

A cross-exchange signal trades venue B when venue A moves first (e.g. A's price moves 0.2% within a second). Backtesting it needs timestamps precise to milliseconds on both venues, your realistic latency to act, and fees on B. Many apparent leads disappear once a 100–300 ms delay and taker fees are added. Compute break-even cost per trade and test sensitivity to latency.

Questions readers ask

Does one exchange lead another?

Sometimes, by milliseconds.

Why does latency matter?

The lead disappears by the time you act.

What timestamps?

Exchange trade times, not receipt times.
