Isolated-Margin Exposure in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

Isolated margin caps a position's loss at its margin — in most cases. The rule misleads when margin is added later, or when the cap encourages oversized positions.

Short answer

Isolated margin limits loss to the margin assigned to a position (plus fees), which makes 'max loss = margin' feel like a risk plan. It misleads in three ways: adding margin to avoid liquidation raises the maximum loss; a small margin with high leverage invites large notional where a normal stop would be hit within the liquidation range; and liquidation fees or penalties may apply. Plan the loss with a stop inside the liquidation distance, and treat added margin as added risk.

Worked example

StepValue
Margin$1,000
Leverage20× → $20,000 notional
Liquidation≈ 4–5% away (illustrative)
Margin added later$1,000 → max loss $2,000
Stop at 2%≈ $400 + fees
Maximum loss ($)Maximum loss ($): Initial margin 1,000 $; After adding margin 2,000 $; Planned stop loss 420 $.MAXIMUM LOSS ($)Initial margin$1,000After adding margin$2,000Planned stop loss$420

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
