Cross-Margin Exposure in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
Cross margin is often called safer because liquidation is further away. That distance comes from putting the whole balance behind every position.
Short answer
Under cross margin, the account balance backs all positions, so liquidation for any one position is further away than on isolated margin. The common rule misleads because the loss isn't capped at a position's margin: a large adverse move can consume most of the balance, and one losing position reduces the buffer for all others. Read 'exposure' as total notional against the whole balance, and set stops by risk, not by liquidation distance.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Balance | $20,000 |
| Position A | $30,000 BTC long |
| Position B | $20,000 ETH long |
| Total notional | $50,000 (2.5× balance) |
| Shared buffer | Losses on A reduce B's room |
Compare modes
| Mode | Liquidation distance | Max loss |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | Closer | Assigned margin |
| Cross | Further | Up to balance |

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
