CHARTSPOD · SPOT VS PERP

How to Compare Spot and Perpetual Charts in ChartsPod

Spot and perpetual charts of the same coin usually move together, but their volume, order books and participants differ. Comparing them side by side shows who is driving a move.

Short answer

Compare spot and perpetual in ChartsPod by opening the same asset's spot pair and perpetual contract on the same venue, interval and time zone. Watch three differences: the price gap (basis), which market leads a move, and where volume and aggression concentrate. Perpetual moves with rising open interest and stretched funding suggest leverage-driven action; spot-led moves with spot aggression suggest cash demand. Record which market you base each conclusion on.

Common errors

Using funding from the perpetual to explain a move that started in spot, or reading spot volume as leverage. Each data series belongs to its market.

Comparing spot on one venue with a perpetual on another adds venue differences on top of market-type differences. Start with both on the same venue.

Ignoring the basis when placing levels: a perpetual trading at a premium will reach a round number before spot does. If your plan uses spot levels but you trade the perp, adjust for the current basis.

The basis

Basis = perpetual price − spot price. Funding mechanisms push perps toward spot over time, so a persistent premium alongside positive funding indicates long demand on the perp side. Illustrative: perp 60,120, spot 60,000 → basis +120 (+0.2%).
