DEX Slippage Tolerance: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
Slippage tolerance is the worst result you're willing to accept after the quote. Set too wide, it invites a worse fill; too tight, the swap fails.
Short answer
Slippage tolerance sets the minimum output (or maximum input) the swap will accept relative to the quote. If a quote says 9.775 ETH and tolerance is 0.5%, the swap reverts if it would deliver less than ≈ 9.726 ETH. It doesn't reduce price impact, which is already in the quote; it limits additional movement before execution. Wide tolerances on thin or volatile tokens give others room to move the price against you. Use the smallest tolerance that lets normal swaps succeed, and check the minimum-received figure.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0.1–0.5% | Typical for liquid pairs |
| 1–3% | Volatile or thin pools; more exposure |
| Very high (10%+) | Large exposure to adverse movement |
| Minimum received | The number that actually binds |

Example
Worked: quote 9.775 ETH, tolerance 0.5% → minimum ≈ 9.726 ETH. At 5% the minimum would be ≈ 9.286 ETH, accepting up to ≈ 0.49 ETH less than quoted.
