DEX Market-Cap Discrepancies: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
The same token can show different market caps on different sites. Supply sources, price sources and verification status explain most gaps.
Short answer
Market cap = price × circulating supply. Sites differ in which pool sets the price, where circulating supply comes from (self-reported, provider estimate, or none — in which case DEX Screener uses FDV), and whether unverified tokens get a market cap at all (CoinGecko onchain returns null for unverified tokens). Before a swap, compare the supply figure and price behind each number rather than picking the one you like.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Different supply | Self-reported vs estimated |
| Different price | Different pools |
| Market cap = FDV | No circulating supply |
| Null on one site | Unverified token |

Example
Illustrative: one site shows $12M using 25% circulating supply; another shows $48M because it falls back to FDV; a third shows no market cap for an unverified token.

Why do market caps differ between sites?

Some providers don't compute it for unverified tokens.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- DEX Screener: Token listing — listing after first liquidity and trade; supply inputs.
- CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
