DEX Token Market-Cap Data: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly

DEX market-cap fields depend on circulating supply that may be self-reported or unverified. A null market cap is often deliberate.

Short answer

CoinGecko's onchain API returns market_cap_usd as null for unverified tokens, and fdv_usd can also be null. DEX Screener's marketCap and fdv are nullable; when no circulating supply is supplied, its market cap equals FDV. So a null market cap usually means the provider declined to compute one without verified supply — not zero value. Don't backfill nulls with FDV silently; label which figure you are using and where its supply came from.

Illustrative: a dashboard shows a market cap for every token by filling nulls with FDV. A token with 90% of supply locked appears ten times larger than its circulating value.

Questions readers ask

Why is CoinGecko's market cap null?

It returns null for unverified tokens.

Why does DEX Screener market cap equal FDV?

No separate circulating supply was supplied.

Should I fill null market cap with FDV?

Only with a clear label.

Sources and methodology

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.

  1. CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
  2. DEX Screener: Token listing — listing after first liquidity and trade; supply inputs.
  3. DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
