DEX Candle Gaps: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
DEX candles exist only when swaps happen. A thin pool's chart can have long gaps that make the last price look current when it isn't.
Short answer
A DEX pool's candles are built from swaps; if no one trades for an hour, there is no candle for that hour (or a flat one, depending on the chart). The 'current' price is then the last swap's price, which may be stale relative to the market. Before a swap, check the time of the last trade, how many candles in the recent window are empty, and whether other pools or venues have traded since. Gaps also distort indicators computed on those candles.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Few gaps | Active pool |
| Many empty candles | Thin trading |
| Last trade long ago | Price may be stale |
| Gap then spike | First trade after a gap |

Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
