CVD Session Resets in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
A CVD that resets each session starts from zero at a fixed time. Readings near the reset are small and noisy; the reset time affects every comparison.
Short answer
Session-reset CVD restarts at a fixed time (often 00:00 UTC). Early in a session its value is small and dominated by a few trades; comparisons of 'CVD higher than at the last high' are only valid within one session. Price response can show whether session CVD direction carries information: measure price change after sessions where CVD finished strongly positive or negative, and whether early-session CVD predicts the rest of the session.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Session CVD positive, price up | Aligned |
| Positive CVD, price down | Absorbed buying across session |
| Early CVD predicts session | Opening flow informative |
| No relationship | Reset adds no information |
Measuring the response
Record end-of-session CVD and session price change; and CVD at a fixed early time versus the remaining session's price change. Keep the reset time fixed.
Example
Illustrative: across sessions, end-of-session CVD sign matches price direction most of the time on one venue, while early-session CVD barely predicts the rest. Results differ by venue; test yours.
