Crypto Options Vanna Exposure: How to Read the Data With Price Context
Vanna measures how an option's delta changes when implied volatility changes. Aggregated, it estimates hedging flows triggered by volatility moves rather than price moves.
Short answer
Vanna is the sensitivity of delta to implied volatility. Vanna exposure aggregates it across strikes using OI and a positioning assumption, estimating how much hedgers' deltas — and so their hedges — would change if IV rose or fell. For example, falling IV after an event can change hedgers' deltas and prompt buying or selling even without a price move. Read it with IV changes and price; like gamma exposure, it's a model.
What vanna links
| Change | Effect via vanna |
|---|---|
| IV falls | Deltas shift; hedges adjust |
| IV rises | Opposite adjustment |
| Far OTM options | Vanna often largest |
| Near expiry | Changes accelerate |
Exposure figures need an assumption about who holds each option (commonly: dealers are short what customers bought). Public open interest doesn't reveal positions, so treat dealer-exposure numbers as model outputs.
