Crypto Index-Price Data: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly

Index price is a weighted average of spot prices from several venues. Binance documents a sentinel value for hidden constituents that must not be read as a price.

Short answer

Binance's constituents endpoint lists the exchanges, symbols, prices and weights behind a symbol's index. The documentation notes that prices from TradFi perp constituents are hidden and shown as -1 — a sentinel, not a negative price. Index-price klines use the 12-field format with ignored slots. When reconstructing or auditing an index, exclude sentinel values, re-normalise weights only if you understand the methodology, and compare your result with the published indexPrice rather than replacing it.

Illustrative: a reconstructed index averages a -1 sentinel with five real prices and comes out roughly 17% low. The published index was fine; the audit was wrong.

Questions readers ask

Why does a constituent show -1?

Binance hides some TradFi perp constituent prices with -1.

Is index price the same as mark price?

No; mark price is derived using the index and premium.

Can I rebuild the index?

Approximately; compare with the published value.

Sources and methodology

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.
