Crypto Basis Curve Changes: How to Read the Data With Price Context

The basis curve plots futures premium across expiries. Its shape and changes show how demand for leverage differs by horizon.

Short answer

The basis curve shows each dated future's premium to spot, usually annualised, by days to expiry. A steep upward curve means longer-dated leverage is expensive; a flat or inverted curve (backwardation) often appears in sell-offs when near-term demand collapses. Read changes with price: a rally that steepens the curve signals growing leveraged demand; a rally with a flat curve suggests spot-led buying.
