Annualized Futures Carry in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
The carry trade buys spot and sells a future to capture the premium. Annualised carry looks attractive until fees, funding of capital and execution are included.
Short answer
Annualised carry is the futures premium converted to a yearly rate. A cash-and-carry trade (buy spot, sell the future, hold to expiry) earns the premium if both legs are executed at quoted prices. With a 2.5% premium and 90 days left, gross carry is ≈ 10.1% annualised; after illustrative costs of 0.3% (spot round trip 0.2%, futures 0.1%) the net is 2.2%, ≈ 8.9% annualised — before capital costs, margin requirements and exchange risk. | Net annualised | ≈ 8.9% |
Price context
Carry rises when futures demand rises — usually in rallies. Falling carry while price rises suggests leverage demand is cooling.
