Ask-Side Absorption Candidates in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Ask-side absorption is heavy buying into resting offers without price rising. It's the mirror of bid absorption, and it needs the same response test.
Short answer
An ask-side absorption candidate shows large buy-aggressor volume (positive delta) at a level while price fails to rise. If price then falls within a defined window, passive sellers absorbed the buying; if price later breaks higher, the offers were only a delay. Check whether offers were refilled (supports) or pulled (weakens), and whether the buying came from spot or perp. Measure across cases.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Falls after | Absorption held |
| Ranges | Stalemate |
| Breaks higher | Absorption failed |
| Breaks higher on OI rise | New longs overwhelmed sellers |
Measuring the response
Use the same definitions as for bid-side absorption, mirrored. Add OI: buying absorbed with OI rising means new longs are trapped if price falls.
Example
Illustrative: 380 BTC of net buying at 61,500, price up 2 bps, OI up. Price falls 1.1% over the next hour and OI drops: new longs exited. Log it with the failures.
