Zero-Lag EMA in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The zero-lag EMA feeds an EMA with a de-lagged price: 2 × price − price from (N−1)/2 bars ago. That extrapolation doubles the live bar's influence.
Short answer
ZLEMA = EMA of (2 × close − close[(N−1)/2]). The input subtracts an older price from twice the current price to offset lag, so a $500 move in the live price changes the input by $1,000. With α = 2/(N+1), a 21-period ZLEMA moves about 2α ≈ 0.18 × the live price change — roughly double a plain EMA. 'Zero-lag' crosses therefore appear and disappear more often intrabar. Use closed-bar values.
Which part of ZLEMA uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Lagged close (N−1)/2 back | No | Fixed |
| 2 × live price | Yes | Double influence |
| EMA of de-lagged input | Yes | ≈ 2α × change |
The doubling is the price of reduced lag: ZLEMA's live value overshoots in fast moves and retraces when the bar fades.
