VWMA in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
A volume-weighted moving average gives heavier bars more influence. On the live bar, both the price and the bar's weight are still changing.
Short answer
VWMA(N) = sum(close × volume) ÷ sum(volume) over N bars. For the live bar, the price is provisional and the volume weight grows through the bar. Early in a bar its weight is small; on a high-volume bar its weight can exceed all others. That means the VWMA can move little at first, then jump late in a heavy bar. Compare VWMA and SMA on the same length to see how much the volume weighting changes intrabar behaviour.
Which part of VWMA uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Completed bars (price × volume) | No | Fixed |
| Live price | Yes | Moves |
| Live volume weight | Yes | Grows through the bar |
Two things change at once, so the VWMA's sensitivity to price rises as the bar's volume accumulates.
