VWAP in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
VWAP is cumulative from its anchor, so every new trade on the live bar changes it. Early in a session it moves a lot; late in a session, very little.
Short answer
VWAP = Σ(typical price × volume) ÷ Σ volume since the anchor (e.g. 00:00 UTC). The live bar's volume and price are added continuously, so VWAP changes intrabar. Its sensitivity falls as the session accumulates volume: one hour in, a heavy bar can move VWAP noticeably; twenty hours in, the same bar barely moves it. Price crossing VWAP intrabar is common near the line; judge reclaims and losses on closed bars.
Which part of VWAP uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative price × volume | Yes | Adds live trades |
| Cumulative volume | Yes | Grows |
| VWAP | Yes | Sensitivity falls through session |
Worked: after 1,000 BTC at an average $60,000, a 200 BTC bar at $60,600 moves VWAP to $60,100. After 20,000 BTC, the same bar moves it to about $60,006.
