Volume Profile in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
A developing volume profile adds every trade to its price rows. The POC and value area can shift during the live bar and session.
Short answer
Volume profile accumulates volume by price over a range (session, visible range or fixed). On the live bar, new trades add to rows, so the POC (highest-volume row) can jump to a new price when another row overtakes it, and the value area (e.g. 70% of volume) expands or shifts. Treat developing POC and value area as provisional; use completed-session profiles for reference levels.
Which part of Volume Profile uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Row volumes | Yes | Grow with trades |
| POC | Yes | Can jump rows |
| Value area | Yes | Expands / shifts |
| Row size | Setting | Changes everything |
POC jumps are discrete: two rows close in volume can swap places several times as trades arrive.
