Ultimate Oscillator in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The Ultimate Oscillator blends buying pressure over three windows (7, 14, 28). The live bar counts in all three, with the most weight in the shortest.
Short answer
Buying pressure (BP) = close − min(low, prior close); true range as usual. UO = 100 × (4 × avg7 + 2 × avg14 + avg28) ÷ 7, where each average is ΣBP ÷ ΣTR over its window. On the live bar, BP changes with the close and TR with the range, and the 7-bar window gives the live bar the most influence. Divergence and threshold rules (e.g. 30/70) should use closed values.
Which part of Ultimate Oscillator uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Buying pressure | Yes | Moves with close |
| True range | Yes | Only widens |
| 7-bar window (weight 4) | Yes | Most sensitive |
| 28-bar window (weight 1) | Yes | Least sensitive |
Because the shortest window is weighted four times, UO behaves more like a fast oscillator inside the live bar than its 28-bar window suggests.
