TRIX in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
TRIX is the rate of change of a triple-smoothed EMA. Heavy smoothing makes it one of the most stable indicators intrabar, but its signal-line crosses can still flip near zero.
Short answer
TRIX = percentage change of EMA(EMA(EMA(close))) from the previous bar. The live close enters the first EMA with weight 2 ÷ (N + 1), and that effect is damped through two more EMAs, so intrabar changes in TRIX are small. Because TRIX values themselves are small (often fractions of a percent), crosses of zero or of its signal line can still occur and reverse within a bar when TRIX is near the crossing point. Use closed bars for crossovers.
Which part of TRIX uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| EMA1 of close | Yes | Weighted by 2/(N+1) |
| EMA2, EMA3 | Yes, damped | Smaller changes |
| TRIX (% change of EMA3) | Yes | Small |
| Signal line | Yes | Smaller still |
Triple smoothing reduces noise and introduces lag. TRIX is useful for trend direction with fewer false crosses, but it is not immune when values hover near zero.

Rules
Near zero, even tiny intrabar changes flip the sign; elsewhere TRIX is stable.

Open ChartsPod replayQuestions readers ask
Is TRIX stable intrabar?
Mostly, due to triple smoothing; near zero it can still flip.
Why is TRIX lagging?
Three EMAs add lag.
Signals?
Closed-bar crosses.
