Trading-Journal Time-in-Trade in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

'Shorter holds are safer' sounds intuitive. Short holds pay more fees per unit of move, and very long holds pay funding — the rule hides both.

Short answer

Holding time affects costs in two opposite ways: short holds pay round-trip fees on smaller moves, so fees take a larger share; long perp holds pay funding over many intervals. A blanket rule ('keep trades under four hours') can raise total cost. Group journal trades by holding time and compare net results after fees and funding before setting a time rule.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
