Trading-Journal Setup Tags: A Worked Crypto Example With Fees Included

Tagging each trade with its setup lets a journal show which ideas pay after fees. Without tags, a good setup hides a bad one.

Short answer

Setup tags group trades by the idea behind them (breakout, pullback, reversal). Example 73-trade journal: breakouts (24 trades) net +$1,850 after $480 fees; pullbacks (31) net +$420 after $620 fees; reversals (18) net −$640 after $360 fees. Gross results were +$2,330, +$1,040 and −$280. Fees took about 60% of the pullback edge, and reversals lost even before costs. Tags turn one total into decisions: keep, fix or drop each setup.

Sources and methodology

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
